I have to be honest; the first thing that came to mind were actual roots, like tree roots.
But, seeing as I always need to try too hard to be 'original', this is what I came up with.

i am a preschool teacher. the children i work with say and do funny things and i write it down. for anonymity boys are "billy" and girls are "suzy."

oh what first came into mind was the edge of nipa hats (if you have heard of them) they are little, but sturdy, houses made of dried rice straws. nice illo. it is original indeed!
